Item A youth center in Lubbock, Texas(Texas Tech University, 1971-12) Kreuzer, Wolfgang E.People do not like to follow their leisure pursuits in the atmosphere which colors their economic lives. They want something different; "some people will know this consciously and know also what it is they want to do. Many others will be unaware of it and may remain passive or indifferent to the time which is their own to use as they wish. Young people in this latter group may react aggressively against their social environment. The provision of leisure-time facilities must, therefore, have a twofold function. One is to provide adequate facilities for those who are already aware of what they want. The other is to provide facilities on such a scale and in such circumstances that those who might not otherwise be attracted to use them will in fact slowly become interested. Leisure-time facilities are not merely free and pleasant places provided just for fun within and around urban areas: "they are essential as a deliberate means of encouraging people, especially young people, in the creative use of leisure so that they may find a sense of purpose end a set of values which will enable them to acquire self confidence and become harmoniously-developed human beings."
