Phytoplankton are an essential component of aquatic systems. Despite their microscopic size, these organisms are responsible for the majority of primary production that takes place in lakes and reservoirs. The development of predictive models has been successful in predicting certain aspects of phytoplankton communities, but none have been able to predict the simple assemblage patterns found in these communities.
