dc.description.abstractThe present investigation sought to investigate factors hypothesized to impact the effectiveness of a university substance-abuse intervention program. Archival data were obtained from the Iowa State University Student Counseling Services. These data were based on 95 college students (69 males and 26 females) participating in one of several elements of the Substance-Abuse Program. Participants were enrolled over a two-year period. The predictor variables included client gender, therapist gender and therapist experience. These were evaluated for their relationship to the outcome variables of grade point average and retention in school. Data analyses were performed using mixed-design analyses of variance (ANOVA), and chi-square analyses. Findings indicated that the main effects of the variables examined (client gender, therapist gender, and therapist experience) had no significant relationship with GPA, as measured at the two points following program completion. Additionally, no significant relationships were found between predictor and outcome variables. These findings are discussed with respect to current perspectives in this area.
