Zusammenfassung
It is the purpose of this study to place at the high school choral director's disposal currently unpublished performing editions of Renaissance vocal music with concise, practical suggestions for preparing and performing the pieces. These suggestions are based on known Renaissance performance practice appropriate for the high school choral ensemble. Although many texts are available which address the issue of performance practice in general, this study will focus on the performance of the enclosed editions. A brief examination of the historical background of each composer's history and style of composition has been made and coupled with an examination of the accepted performance practices of the time. This includes a discussion of tempo, performing forces, dynamics, performance pitch, meter and stress, expressive aspects, and appropriate vocal quality. Rehearsal techniques are presented utilizing the aspects of performance practice as their basis. These techniques have been designed to enable the high school choral director and his students understand and use conmion practices of the Renaissance period appropriate for the high school choir. This study also examines the editorial process. The topics include determining text underlay, determining tempo, determining perfomiance pitch, and the preparation of copy. The exploration of historical and stylistic considerations, a discussion of the editorial process, and providing practical performing editions will provide the high school choral director with a viable, efficient source for understanding and performing exciting works from the Renaissance period.
