Abstract

Ship Name:Alert; Sailed: 1902-1923; Type: Steel 4-masted schooner; Built by: Hoquiam, Washington by Hitchins and Joyce; Dimensions: 174.5' x 37.9' x 23'; Tonnage: 623 tons.

Description

Alert was built for the lumber trade and this photograph depicts the ship with a lumber cargo stacked high on the deck. West coast schooners possessed several distinctive design traits and Alert demonstrates a couple of them: the leg of mutton spanker was a typical, though not universal, characteristic of west coast sail. The raised trunk cabin expanded to the bulwarks was a modification of Scandinavian practice that found a welcome home on the west coast. Not only did this arrangement increase freeboard aft, but it also made for more commodious accommodations. Alert piled up on a reef in Tonga in 1923.
