Abstract

Ship Name:Golden Gate; Sailed: 1888-1934; Type: Steel 4-masted, later bark; Built by: Whitehaven Shipbuilding Co.; Dimensions: 293.3' x 42.8' x 24'; Tonnage: 2341 tons.

Description

Built for John Herron’s Lord Line, Lord Shaftesbury sailed for Herron for a dozen years before being bought by a Liverpool owner who named the ship Golden Gate. Sold to Rolph Navigation and Coal of San Francisco in 1911, Golden Gate continued to work the oceans. Never a fast sailer, Golden Gate was more than once reported overdue. There are many photographs of the vessel because it survived until scrapped to 1934. Obviously at some point in its career, the square rig was stripped off of the jigger, but I do not know when.
