Description
Euterpe, like Himalaya was an iron ship built to a standard that served it well for more than a century of service. So much has been written about Star of India, ex Euterpe that it seems superfluous to add anything here. The ship traded to India, had mishaps and slow passages, but survived British until 1897 when sold to Hawaiian owners. Later (1899) J. J. Moore of San Francisco purchased the ship and in 1901 the Alaska Packers Association bought the Euterpe and it became part of their growing fleet. Renamed Star of India in 1906, the Alaska Packers also re-rigged the ship as a bark, which rig Star of India maintains today. Star of India last sailed north in 1923. Sold to a promoter in 1926, the ship kicked around but mostly languished on the west coast until a group of spirited citizens in San Diego scraped together the funds to buy the ship in 1959.
