Description
Routenburn was built for R. Shankland and voyaged for that firm until 1905 when, as Svithiod, the ship became a sail training vessel under Norwegian ownership. There were still regulations that required time in sail to get the highest qualification as master. Thus sail training was an important function even as the ships themselves were rapidly disappearing. In 1922, Svithiod changed hands again and became the Swedish Beatrice engaged generally in the grain trade. Ten years later the ship was towed off to Stavanger to be scrapped.
The photograph shows Svithiod well sea-worn with World War I identification (which sometimes even worked!) on its sides.
