Abstract

Ship Name:Rackel (Rachel); Sailed: 1886-1908; Type: Wood 3-masted bark; Built by: Norway; Dimensions: 149' x 37' x 16.8'; Tonnage: 557 tons.

Description

Obviously, whoever published this photograph inked in the ship’s name on the transom. The parallels between west coast North American wooden shipbuilding and Scandinavian shipbuilding are striking. Deck arrangements, chain plates in lieu of channels, and several other details seem more than mere coincidence borne of both working in wood. Scandinavians flocked to the west coast to fish, work the timber and build ships. I believe that they brought ideas and traditions with them that then translated and were modified on the west coast.
