The Advancements of Cementitious Materials Through Nanotechnology

A literature review on the influence of the advancements in nanotechnology on the properties and performance of cementitious materials is presented. The manufacturing, chemistry and properties of various types of cements, mortars and concrete were discussed as a basis for analyzing the influence of nanosilica in altering these properties. Further, the development of concrete technology with the emergence of mineral admixtures such as fly ash, silica fume, ground granulated blast furnace slag, etc. was reviewed in order to evaluate the significance of this new nanotech in modifying the properties of the cementitious materials. It was found out that use of nanotechnology through using nanosilica as a mineral admixture has significantly improved the performance of concrete under adverse conditions, minimized its environmental concern by reducing the use of Portland cement.
