Abstract

THESIS STATEMEN T Architecture can express the spirit of a natural context through mixed use of native materials, providing a catalyst for human interaction with nature and self-reflection. SCOPE OF PROJECT The project consists of a new community center to serve as a focal point for a small planned development of single family homes. The center will encompass areas for group and individual functions. Athletic and work out facilities, dining, private paid accommodations, patios, decks, and waterfront access will serve for group access. Lookouts, small pavilions, and areas for self-reflection, relaxation, and contemplation will serve for private activities. A pedestrian and bicycle path will create a network of shorter distances from all areas of the development to the community center. The network of paths will also embody places for nature observation and reflection. CONTEX T STATEMEN T The site is an old ranch that has recently been subdivided into lots ranging from two to five acres in size. The planned community sits adjacent to the Pedemales River about sixteen miles west of Austin on Highway 71. The waterfront lots provide spectacular views and access to the river but also contain the roughest terrain. The utilities and setbacks have been provided by Travis County and many houses are now under construction. The area is fairly secluded from other development and maintains a rural ambiance. The land owners range in age but are made up primarily of upper class married couples looking to retire in ten to twenty years.
