Performance center for Levelland, Texas

Abstract

This document provides a description of the program for a performance center that will be located in Levelland, Texas. The concept for this building deals with Critical Regionalism. Critical Regionalism can be described as taking elements from a region and using these elements in an unfamiliar manner, causing people to reflect and make value judgements about the elements that make up their region's culture, environment, and history. The goal of Critical Regionalism is to slow the advancement of a global community by strengthening the culture of a region. This performance center will be located on a site in Levelland, Texas, that borders Highway 114. On the site stands an abandoned cotton ginning building. This building will be used as a base for design using the concept of Critical Regionalism. This performance center will be designed primarily with the performance of orchestral music in mind, but will be able to accommodate other types of musical performance also. The performance center will accommodate up to a 120-person orchestra, 1500 patrons, and a resident staff of 14 people.
