Psychological responses to light: A library center with children’s library El Paso, Texas

Abstract

In architecture, light, natural and/or artificial, is an instigator of psychological responses with in the occupant that affect how that person feels and functions within a space. We as hunnans respond to the illuminated environment in terms of moods and reaction, and this affects our overall well-being. An illuminated environment has the capability to stimulate, increase creativity, or initiate action (motion). The use of light, natural and artificial and stimulate such responses and can associate the occupant with feelings of comfort, satisfaction, and sense of place. Our bodies have a biological need for this stimulation and psychological relation. We must satisfy our need for orientation, defense, stimulation, imagination, and sustenance. We can use light as an architectural design element to satisfy those needs. One must use light to allow the occupant to respond to it, experience it, and be a part of it so that together they comprise of an essential architectural element. The facility proposed is a library center that would focus on a children's reading area. In addition to the main library, there would also be a day care center, a children's library and two lecture rooms. Throughout the facility, there would be a combination of artificial and natural lighting that would stimulate responses to the facility such as imagination and motivation. This facility gives way to such activities as social gathering, reading, playing, communication, day-dreaming, and imagining. The site considered is in a growing area of East El Paso. It is slightly underdeveloped, but the rate of growth is rapid. Many new homes are being built and such a facility would be great for the children in this area and the city of El Paso.
