An equestrian facility and clubhouse in Caprock Canyon State Park, Quitaque, Texas

Abstract

'ifhe beginnings of the association between horse and man are prehistoric. Cavalry and horse-drawn engines of war were an Important component of every major army for thousands of years. Only after the First Worid "^ar and the Invention of the Internal combustion engine did the horse's role change. The true working horse still remains today, but in modesty, and is no longer used as a companion of war, nor used to cultivate land, and they are not considered beasts of burden. Today, a horse's emphasis is with recreation and sport, or linked to animal companions, providing people, as riders or spectators, with pleasurable experiences in the wilderness for hiking, packing or site seeing. My intent with this project, of an E(\uestrlan 'Facility and Clubhouse for the owners, is to provide a place that horses can be properly maintained and cared for, in an environment that allows easy accessibility and control for the owners, and where the canyon site car\ provide a peaceful and enjoyable context to inhabit these animals. The 13,900 acre site will be used minimally, due to the affect of my design on the land, and with the Intent of blending the building into the canyon site with as little Impact on nature as possible. The estimated size of this facility will be no more than "50 horses at onetime, with the appropriate number of hands per horse, and a managerial staff to accommodate. The horse Industry is one of the fastest growing Industries In the United States. West Texas is a relatively new area of settlement and development, particularly Including recreation development. There are no major ec\ulne recreational facilities in West Texas, so this can be frustrating for the many horse owners In this area. I feel there is a definate need for this type of facility In West Texas, and a definate need for a special place to train, breed, care for, and house these animals.
