Abstract

RESEARCH PROBLEM: To INCORPORATE TWO S O P H I S T I C A T E D R A I L SYSTEMS W I T H I N A H I S T O R I C A N D TEMPESTUOUS ENVIRONMENT. THIS CAN BE ACCOM P L I S H E D THROUGH THE SYNTHESIS OF STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETICS TO EXPRESS TRANQUILITY AND GRACE THROUGH THE INHERENT PROPERTIES OF MOVEMENT. THESIS STATEMENT: THE PURPOSE OF THIS THESIS IS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE DESIGN OF AN INTRAMODAL RAIL STATION TERMINUS IN THE LONGHORN QUARRY OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, CAN BE ACHEIVED THROUGH THE ARCHITECTURAL SYNTHESIS OF LIGHT WEIGHT STRUCTURAL STEEL TECHNOLOGY AND THE VARIABLES ASSOCIATED WITH THE SITE. FACILITY TYPE: AN INTRAMODAL RAIL SYSTEM FOR THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO WHICH WILL CONNECT TWO DIFFERENT SPEED RAIL SYSTEMS ALONG WITH THE CAR, BUS, AND PEDESTRIAN. FACILITY SCOPE: THE INTRAMODAL RAIL STATION WILL BECOME A TERMINUS FOR A HIGH-SPEED RAIL THAT CONNECTS THE THREE LARGEST CITIES IN THE STATE OF TEXAS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME CONNECTING TO SAN ANTONIO'S LIGHT RAIL FABRIC. THE PROPOSED STATION WILL ACCOMMODATE UP TO 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 PEOPLE DAILY AND WILL ACT AS A SUBURBAN NODE FOR THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO CONTEXT: THE INTRAMODAL RAIL STATION WILL BE LOCATED IN THE PERIPHERY OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS WITHIN AN OLD CEMENT FACTORY. DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROJECT THE SITE CAN ACCOMMODATE THE TRANSFER OF 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 PATRONS DAILY AND THE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS NEEDED FOR THE TWO RAIL SYSTEMS. AS THE WORLD DEVELOPS SO DO PROBLEMS OF OVERPOPULATION AND OVERCROWDING INFRASTRUCTURES. THUS, THERE IS A DEMAND FOR ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF TRANSPORTION FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES THIS DEMAND BY ALEVIATING CONGESTION ON SAN ANTONIO'S FREEWAY SYSTEMS WHILE ADDRESSING THE FUTURE PROBLEMS OF INTERSTATE STAGNATION WITHIN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
