Abstract

Nafion bundles are being made for use in spaceflight humidity control systems. To remove water from a process stream, Nafion only requires modest particulate filtration of the process stream, forced convection (i.e. a fan) to move the process stream through the bundle, and access to space vacuum or dry gas purge. Bundle quantity and configuration (parallel or series) can be adjusted to achieve a specified water removal performance requirement. Specific applications are discussed including humidity control of a spacecraft cabin, water separation/supply for air revitalization systems, and water separation/supply for in situ resource utilization systems on the moon and Mars. Nafion bundle testing has been performed to characterize water removal performance and response to spacecraft-like shock and vibration environments.
