dc.description.abstract | Symphony No. 2, which is subtitled the “Ocean Symphony”, is the second symphony from Tyler Hughes. The symphony is programmatic and, through each movement, continues a narrative of deep-sea exploration. The topic of the symphony was approached from a scientific lens as opposed to a nautical or fantastical point of view. This symphony also explores a number of techniques as well as cultural references. Each movement depicts the characteristics of the four main depth levels of the ocean. This paper will go in-depth on how the music portrays the unique qualities of these levels. | |
