Abstract

The Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) instrument, on board of MetOp-SG-SAT-B, is a conical scanning radiometer operating from 183 up to 664 GHz. This is the state of the art for radiometers. It will fly during a mission time duration of 7.5 years in a Sun-Synchronous orbit between 820 and 850 Km of altitude and L.T.A. at 21:30. Thermal Control is done by passive means: SSM, MLI / SLI, washers, paint and 6 PI regulated redundant heater lines. Temperature and thermal stability requirements and the moving parts rotating at 45 r.p.m. demand a large effort in the analysis and materials. The design minimizes sun-intrusion into the OBCT pyramids. The main components are enclosed by a specific rotatory Carbon Fibre SunShield, but the necessary aperture for the main reflector field of view makes the general objective a challenging thermal design. The major components are: Antenna assembly made of golden finished aluminium dishes (main and cold sky reflectors), which provide the means to observe the Earth and the deep sky, and the on board calibration target OBCT. The OBCT is PI heater controlled to guarantee the temperature stability required along the mission. Front End placed in the rotating section with dedicated thermal radiators and PI heater line. 5 Back Ends placed in the Instrument Rotating Platform, each of them connected to the Front End's. C.F. structure composed by static and rotating parts linked through the SCM. CDPU in the rotating section, is in charge of the acquisition of video channels from BE's, and is in charge of controlling the active heater lines on the IRP. ICU and SCE, placed in the Instrument Fixed Platform (IFP) provide the interface to the platform, and control the SCM retrieving telemetries of the instrument.
