An independent living center for severely disabled adults in Lubbock, Texas
Résumé
The number of people with disabling conditions is enormous and increasing
each year. Yet housing which accommodates the needs of people with disabilities
and useful information not between widely available. To date this information has
been limited lo a few special researchers and designers who have developed an
expertise in this field. Architecture is creating an environment for people and that
means all "people" are not merely limited to the "able - bodied" but it is universal
design for all people.
A "home" for I the disabled should be a healing and personal place of living rather than a cold sterile place like a typical public institution. I believe this can be achieved through its scale, proportion, order, color, material and even symbolism and metaphor.
