A healthy environment is very important to aid the recovery of people who are ill or sick. The objective of this thesis is to create a healthy environment for youth suffering with cancer to escape the day-to-day routines of their fight with the disease. An attempt will be made to merge the retreat center with the contextual environment. Through this fusion , a union will be formed between the facility and the all-encompassing beauty of God 's creation . The two environments will be seen as one harmonious relationship with the natural landscape . Henry David Thoreau said , "dwell as near as possible to the channel in which your life flows .'1(Thoreau 1991, 43) The retreat center will be a temporary dwelling place, which will connect the youth with their channel of life , the natural environment. Interaction between the youth and nature will increase when the distinction between the natural and built environment becomes less evident. This will occur because the users of the facility will be close to nature as they are immersed in the contextual environment. Ian McHarg states , "Our eyes do not divide us from the world , but unite us with it. Let this be known to be true. Let us then abandon the simplicity of separation and give unity its due .... To do this we must design with nature. 11(Marcus & Barnes 1999, 102) Through this relationship and the use of natural light , the facility will become a healing and rehabilitative tool. These together, with the power of fresh air, will create a harmony, which promotes rejuvenation and a sense of escape for youth who visit the retreat center. As Frederick Law Olmsted once wrote, "the natural environment employs the mind without fatigue, tranquilizes yet enlivens it and thus gives the effect of refreshing rest and reinvigoration ."(Marcus & Barnes 1999, 97) Through the conception of the facility I will strive to grasp this idea and form a center for youth who are fighting cancer, to escape into a healing environment, away from the hospitals of which they are so use to.
