The rapid development of technologies has brought about opportunities for education, especially in online and hybrid settings. Multimedia materials play an important role in the holistic process of instructional design. Given the importance of developing quality multimedia materials, research was conducted to explore the methods of designing effective multimedia materials. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of background classical music (The Mozart Sonata K.448, 2nd Movement – Andante) and decorative pictures on learners’ retention, comprehension, and motivation. The results of the study suggested that classical background music did not have significant impacts on retention, comprehension, and motivation. Decorative pictures were found to improve attention, but not to significantly affect confidence, satisfaction, retention and comprehension. Implications and suggestions for further research are provided.
