An introduction to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit survey of admiralty law for the period from September 1, 1974, through August 31, 1975. The author gives a brief summary of the maritime appeals contained in the survey and notes that the Fifth Circuit continued to be confronted with a large volume of maritime appeals. Although the 1972 Amendments to the Longshoreman and Harbor Workers Compensation Act drastically changed the law by refusing to allow nonseamen to sue shipowners under the unseaworthiness doctrine, there are as yet no reported cases under the amended Act. Even so, some cases decided in this survey period effected important substantive changes under prior law. Additionally, important decisions will be forthcoming shortly.
