Abstract

Phase Change Materials are very good candidates to smooth temperature variations of units which undergo thermal cycling dissipations or external cycling thermal loads. They can also be used to damped fast but short thermal load such as the ones encountered during reentry of vehicules in atmosphere. The main drawbacks of PCM are their very low conductivity and volume variation during phase changes. This work presents the various methods that have been tested and evaluated to produce hermetic vessels filled with PCM with enhanced thermal conductivities. The influence of such thermal damper on the thermal control of an equipment is showed. The effect of the PCM fusion temperature and heat sink temperature is illustrated. Tests have been conducted under atmospheric pressure and under vacuum with many thermal cycles and all the vessels showed a very good stability.
