VOLTTRON based implementation in controlling Battery Energy Storage System of Microgrids

This thesis uses VOLTTRON, an open-source operating system recently developed by Pacific Northwest Laboratory, to implement advanced digital sensing and information technology and to address difficulties with energy management systems. Efficient storage management can be costly and puts significant strain on the electric grid during peak demands. As such, in this thesis, VOLTTRON was used to set the dispatch level of storage battery based on its State-of-Charge (SOC) value on an islanded microgrid environment. Additionally, VOLTTRON was used to add custom monitoring to the Microgrid to aid in diagnosing potential fault and overload.
