Abstract

One of the most valuable assets most families have is their primary residence. Most homes, particularly those carrying mortgages, have homeowner’s insurance policies protecting the structure and contents from a list of various perils. One peril, or loss event, that is typically not covered by homeowner policies is flooding or damage caused by flood waters. Unfortunately, flood insurance take-up rates are low, and many homeowners do not have any form of flood-insurance coverage, even those located in floodplains. It is important for financial planners and insurance agents to know factors that influence the demand for various insurance products like flood insurance. This series of essays can help them suggest and sell coverage to those whose property is at risk for flooding.
