Abstract

The issue this phenomenological study addresses is the effects of work-family conflict on head football coaches and their spouses. To address this phenomenon, the purpose of the study is to examine the lived experiences of head football coaches in Texas and their spouses through a structural family theory lens. By doing so, the study seeks to understand the challenges families face. Data will be collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with a targeted/strategic sampling from both large and small schools to provide various experiences that coaches and their spouses may face. The data lead to the following 5 themes: coaching 1st, family 2nd, family fends for themselves, if you want to see dad go to work, must accept and tolerate, and he is who I thought he was. These themes were useful for understanding how coaching families are structured and how they operate under the pressures of work-family conflict.
