Abstract

The object of this paper is to describe and contrast two pieces of chamber music that feature the bassoon and are derived from the same folk music material. The works studied herein are Retablos (2007) for bassoon and strings (violin, viola and cello), and Bulto San Ysidro (2013) for flute, cor anglais and bassoon by New Mexico composer Daniel Paul Davis. His source material was collected by John Donald Robb and can be found in his book, Hispanic Folk Music of New Mexico and the Southwest: A Self Portrait of a People (University of Oklahoma Press, 1980). This document will also include a brief biography of the composer, about whom no scholarly writing yet exists, and a formal analysis of the two works. Appendices containing notation of the folk song source material and a list of Davis's works for classical double reed instruments (oboe, cor anglais, bassoon and contrabassoon) will be included after the analysis section of this paper.
