Abstract

The author reviews Derrick A. Bell’s book, Faces at the Bottom of the Well: The Permanence of Racism. The reviewer is reminded of many painful events and circumstances growing up as a young African-American in a West Central Alabama community. However, despite his experiences the reviewer disagrees with Bell’s belief that black Americans will never gain full equality. The reviewer holds out hope that current civil-rights enforcement schemes can be corrected and made more effective and fairer.
