Abstract
In this first chapter the major areas of concern to this investigation are set forth. In the first section, some central theoretical and practical differences between psychodynamic and social behavioral approaches to personality are presented. The following sections consider Walter Mischel's criticisms of the utility of traditional psychodynamic clinical procedures. They review the research relevant to these traditional procedures. The final section states the issues that will be addressed by the hjrpotheses of this work.
