Abstract

An experimental study was performed on two sample sets of weathered fully tempered glass. Sample set A contained 14 glass specimens and originated from north east United States. Sample set B contained 16 glass specimens and originated from south west United States. All specimens were loaded with a monotonically increasing pressure until fracture occurred in accordance to the ASTM E997 test method. The failure load time histories were converted to equivalent 3s failure loads using a modified load transformation integration method that incorporates residual compressive surface stress. Variations of the residual compressive surface stress measurements are presented for each specimen and the effect the variations have on the equivalent 3s failure load calculation. It was observed the minimum residual compressive surface stress measurements resulted in the lowest equivalent 3s failure load. Comparisons between the equivalent 3s failure load and the ASTM E1300 and Morse and Norville load resistance predictions are presented. The mean equivalent 3s failures loads were 2.5 time larger than ASTM E1300 load resistance and 1.4 time larger than Morse and Norville load resistance predictions suggesting fully tempered glass does not weather like annealed glass.
