Resumen
The objective of this thesis is to examine the means by which a model for the signal and noise associated with magnetic tape recording can be developed. A general model is first created in terms of signal, signal-dependant noise and signal-independent noise. Analysis is then performed on the signal-independent noise to characterize the statistical nature of this noise. The signal-dependant noise is than isolated to determine the modal to be used for this type of noise. Simulations are generated to ensure that the procedures used on the actual data are valid. Once the modal for the signal-dependant noise is formed, it is than implemented into the general modal to provide a better understanding of it. After a modal has been established, it will be easier to find ways of reducing the noise, thereby producing higher quality magnetic tape recorders.
