Oversharing on social networking sites: A contemporary communication phenomenon

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand what behaviors and perceptions are associated with oversharing on social media. A survey of 410 undergraduate college students defined “oversharing” in their own words, identified topics that they considered to be a part of that category, and revealed differences in their perceptions of oversharing among various social media sites. Results of this study can help scholars understand human behaviors that occur online and how they may impact interpersonal communication.
