Abstract
Conceived by the bureaucratic, military and intellectual elites of the Ottoman state, Turkism was applied by the Kemalist state in the aftermath of the Turkish War of Independence. However, the state had to modify, omit, improvise and alter parts of Turkism as it sought to apply it in Anatolia.
