dc.description.abstract	Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf in Big Spring, Texas is a new school with a special purpose. The purpose of this school is to undertake the task of educating deaf students while, at the same time, existing in its own selfcontained environment. This institution is unique for the fact previously mentioned. Currently, only two colleges for the deaf similar to this one exist. They are National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York, and Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. Due to the scarcity of these schools, a great need has developed and Gallaudet and NTID cannot keep pace with the demand. The regional need is very apparent since both of the established schools are in the East. The establishment of SWCID has brought a great deal of excitement to deaf students in the southwestern United States.
