Despite 34-43% of psychotherapy clients using herbs to treat or compliment the treatment of health problems, the mental health profession knows little regarding which herbs are suitable, and which are contraindicated in clients with depression or anxiety (Caldwell, Winek, & Becvar, 2006; Elkins, Marcus, Rajab, & Durgam, 2005). For over 3,000 years herbalists have accumulated knowledge concerning herbs’ risks, and their relevance in addressing these issues (Flaws & Lake, 2015; Rathbone et al., 2007). Using the Delphi methodology, a consensus was sought among master herbalists regarding a safety rating for herbs which they agree upon as appropriate in treating or complementing the treatment of depression and anxiety. Master herbalists also identified 14 herbs with potential drug-herb interactions not currently noted in the literature and these findings culminated in the creation of the Herbs for Depression Mini Reference and the Herbs for Anxiety Mini Reference. These references are practical resources designed to more fully empower marriage family therapists (MFT) in balancing the duel demands of honoring patients’ healing beliefs, while maintaining patient safety, and to better equip MFTs and other psychotherapists, in helping patients collaborate with integrative health care teams.
