Abstract

The atmosphere of a fitness facility make or break it's success. Those who are into the improvement of their bodies and physical condition are usually very particular about the atmosphere within which they train. These types of athletes are usually very particular in many aspects of their life. They hold dedication, responsibility and desire as top priorities in their day to day lives. They therefore will not workout, or return to a facility that has no motivational aspects, or is just not a comfortable environment for which to exercise. There are several ways that this particular type of atmosphere can be reached and maintained for the adapting and constant change in the world of personal training and fitness. Athletes can be motivated by the action of others, "Watching others successfully perform can raise the self-efficacy of the observer relative to task performance" (Bandura, L 1986, Vongjaturapat). Visual images of structures or large naturally occurring creations can also be used to enhance performance and motivation. Kinesthetic imagery, the perception of the movement of muscle tendons, and joints can produce "concomitant - efferent responses in various locations of the body depending on imagery type/modality" (Hale, 7). The visual perception of a mountain or the action of curling a dumbbell can generate muscle response and motivation in weight training or athletic competition. The more vivid the image the more intense the affect that is produced. In the design of a private fitness center we can incorporate positive kinesthetic imagery in structure and motivation of the users, while promoting vicarious experience through the use of translucent materials, penetration of separating barriers, and integration of spaces.
