Several research studies have been conducted to compare the performance of requirement analysis techniques. However, the research results shows three confiising phenomena: first, no requirement analysis technique has consistentiy better performance than another technique; second, requirement analysis technique can improve the performance of expert infomiation analysts significantly while providing little help for novice information analysts; and third, expert information analysts tend to use multiple requirement analysis techniques simuhaneously to analyze information requirements. In order to solve the three puzzling problems and to identify the best approach for requirement analysis techniques, an understanding of the role requirement analysis techniques play in the process of information requirement analysis is thus necessary. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the cognitive environment of information analysts that determines the performance of requirement analysis techniques in the accuracy of requirement specifications. In order to understand the performance of requirement analysis techniques in information requirement analysis, this research investigates the cognitive behavior of information requirement analysis as a process of text comprehension. On the basis of the theories of text comprehension in the research of cognitive science, this research proposes three cognitive models of information requirement analysis that can answer the three puzzling problems adequately. On the basis of the proposed cognitive models in this research, five research propositions for the cognitive environment of requirement analysis techniques are derived. Finally, two experiments are conducted to verify the five research propositions. The major contribution of this research is providing three cognitive models on the basis of the theories of text comprehension to explain adequately die role of requirement analysis techniques in the process of information requirement analysis.
