A Performance Guide to Three Representative Electroacoustic Piano Works by Mario Davidovsky, Dan VanHassel and Peter Van Zandt Lane

Abstract

This document offers a guide to pianists that are interested in exploring the following electroacoustic works: Synchronisms No. 6, Lush Intrinsic and Studies in Momentum. It offers a historical overview at the integration of electroacoustic sounds and the piano, analysis of the mentioned repertoire and its performance considerations.

This type of repertoire provides new performing possibilities for pianists, since the pieces that are mainly performed nowadays in conservatories, music universities and concert halls follow the pianistic tradition that has been strongly established for decades. This can also allow performers to intertwine contemporary repertoire with the traditional one, giving an opportunity to audiences to compare styles and to explore different sonorous possibilities that can be applied on stage by the use of external technologies. The use of these technologies can also demonstrate to modern audiences how tools that can have a daily use (such as computers) can act as artistic devices.
