Abstract
The original poems in Pilotage: Poems explore the rapidly shifting tectonics of place, faith, and family in the twenty-first century, especially as they relate to identity. As the speaker of the poems navigates a range of experiences that challenge his sense of identity, he considers the competing tensions of belief and disbelief; the natural and human worlds; rural and urban life; isolation and companionship; certainty and uncertainty. Along the way, the reader will encounter a wide array of landscapes, people, towns, cities, religious traditions, and customs from across the United States, Italy, Taiwan, and Benin. In the encounters, the speaker—and hopefully the reader—discovers new insights and empathy in a rapidly evolving society.
