Abstract
This study is a replication and extension of the Fredrickson (2007a) study that surveyed music majors about their attitudes toward private teaching and pre-service education. The current study administered an adapted version of the previous study to current Texas private lesson instructors (n = 107) to learn more about their attitudes towards private teaching and pre-service education, as well as identify areas of disagreement between this group and the music majors involved in the previous study. Although no statistically significant differences were found between the two studies, several areas of interest were identified. These include a lack of continuing education resources for active private lesson teachers, a lack of agreement on private lesson teaching “best practices,” and a negative view of the status of private lesson teaching as a career in their society.
