Abstract

In previous work, the authors developed exact analytical solutions for the mathematical model governing cross flow filtration in both tubular and narrow rectangular geometries. The three dependent variables are the permeate and the Poiseuille flows, and the pressure distribution. The focus of the current effort is determination of the optimal permeate flow at prescribed conditions, for permanent in situ cleanable metal media with significantly higher efficiency than standard HEPA media and geometry properties that have the lowest mass. Given specified filter dimensions, the mathematical model enables an optimal design in terms of characteristic parameters that arise in the analytical solution. A weight comparison between various materials (e.g. stainless steel and titanium) to achieve desired launch mass is also possible. Illustrative examples will be provided based on a narrow rectangular filter intended for cabin air purification and carbon capture. With minor modifications the model will accommodate a tubular geometry suitable for use in the process of harvesting of Martian carbon dioxide for the production of water. A major deliverable in this effort is a filtration calculator that allows the user to specify filter geometry and process parameters in order to determine the resulting filter performance, or specify desired filter performance requirements and determine appropriate filter design parameters. An update on the status of this computational tool will be provided.
