Abstract

This thesis analyzes the relationship between religion and imperialism by focusing on the Anglican missionaries of the Church Missionary Society and their work in East Africa both before and after the forming of the British colonial state in this region (from 1870 to 1925). The thesis focuses on the ideologies that are present in the minds of the missionaries and in the policies of the British government. This analysis is laid over the political and social events of the period in order to show both how ideologies affected events during this period and how the events affected the ideologies of the missionaries and the colonial government. The thesis also shows developments in East African Anglican beliefs, including the shift from missionary Christianity to a self-supporting East African Anglican Church. These shifts incorporate the conflict and tension of the ideologies of the missionaries and the British government. In the end, a greater understanding will be gained of this period of history and that the intricacies of the ideological, religious, political and social landscapes of East Africa between 1870 and 1925. At the same time, the thesis adds to the general historiography of East Africa which to this date still has various components that need to be explored.
