Abstract
Theory - Architecture is adaptive use. As America continues to build out and over the landscape, this once abundant resource will continue to shrink, and architects and designers will have to turn to buildings already built to rehabilitate and reuse them. Adaptive reuse is a way to achieve a change in these old buildings. Americans are also discovering their downtown's again, and adaptive use of structures is paving the way for a renaissance in the central business core of cities across the nation. Facility - The Hotel Lubbock/Pioneer Hotel in downtown Lubbock, Texas will be rehabilitated and turned into one and two bedroom apartments, with retail and resident amenities located on the first and second floors. The apartments will fill the need for housing in the downtown area and bring people to live in this area, to contribute to a rebirth of the central business district. Context - The Hotel Lubbock/Pioneer Hotel is an important landmark in downtown Lubbock. It's preservation and reuse is important if a rejuvenation of the central core is to be achieved. The design should respond to the existing integrity of the hotel, but be sensible enough for modem and economical living. Retail and dining establishments on the first floor and along the street should be built to encourage pedestrian activity along the street, and help to stimulate and rebuild the urban activity that is lacking now.
