Contemporary myth and meaning-making: Queer and post-colonial spaces

Contemporary works of mythological rewriting, such as Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series or Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles showcase an increasing interest in reimagining specific myths for increasingly inclusive purposes. These examples of contemporary myths seek to expand their scope beyond typical hegemonic structures and into the realm of feminist, queer, or non-Western studies. This thesis analyzes texts such as Wake, Siren: Ovid Resung, The Mythic Dream, Anowa, and Pantomime for the ways in which they mirror Gloria Anzaldúa’s proposed “new mythology,” and by doing so create more inclusive creative spaces.
