Abstract
Even since the early days of computing, most file systems are designed to be run and maintained on a single machine. As networking became more prevalent, some file systems were designed to work with others via network shares. More recently, a few file systems have been designed for distributed implementation and operation across several machines on a network. We'll review a few of these distributed file systems, then take a look at a service-oriented file system called SILENUS as well as a file transfer framework than can be used to further enhance its capabilities.
