Abstract
Ship Name: Loch Ard; Sailed: 1874-1878; Type: Iron 3-masted; Built by: Dumbarton, Scotland by A. McMillan & Son; Dimensions: 262.7' x 38.3' x 23'; Tonnage: 1624 tons.
Description
This photograph of the stately Loch Ard belies its troubled beginnings. Loch Ard dismasted twice on its maiden voyage, and later, after a very short life, stranded in 1878. Many contemporaries of Loch Ard painted the space between the boot top and the painted ports a sort of blue grey. Loch Ard seems to favor black above and below the painted ports.
