dc.description.abstractSAFFIRE (Spacecraft Fire Experiment) iterations 4, 5, and 6 have a module called the Far Field Diagnostic. This module is physically separate from the main SAFFIRE combustion element. The Far Field Diagnostic is an instrumentation package that can assess air quality and combustion products in a location physically remote from the zone of combustion. The Far Field Diagnostic module also contains two air purification beds. One bed removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere prior to combustion, so CO2 sensors can more accurately measure the extent of combustion. A second air purification bed removes particulates, volatile organics, acid gases, and catalytically converts CO into CO2. This paper describes the design, configuration, and performance of these two beds.
