Abstract

In recent years there has been an increase of anti-Islamic sentiment in the United States. Following the events of 9/11 politicians and the media have furthered the fear of Islam and its followers. Previous literature has suggested that religiosity and religion have a negative impact on crime, however the most vehement supporters of Islamophobia are characterized as Christian followers. This study will attempt to link Christian Fundamentalism to hate crimes perpetrated against Arab Americans to determine if religion is a major motivating factor behind Islamophobia. Data used from the UCR and ARDA will be used to complete this research.
