The Precambrian complex of the Montezuma Quadrangle is exposed on thc southeastcrn flank of the Sangre de Cristo Rango of nortliern Ncw Mexico. Precambrian rocks are covered by Paleozoic and Mcsozoic sedimentary rocks. The complex consists of three lithologic units; quartzosO' feldspathic gneiss, amphibolite, and pegmatites. There have been at least two periods of Precambrian deformation and metamorphism. The earlier deformation produced isoclinal folding trending northeast. The accompanying metamorphic event was of medium grade ivhich resulted in recrystallization and mineral genesis. The second deformation produced flexure-slip folding about an axis trending northeast and produced cataclasis along foliation planes developed during the first deformation. The second metamorphic event approximated the almandineamphibolite facies in intensity, but was of short duration Injections of granitic juvenile fluids characterized both deformati.onal and metamorphic events. The entire sequence is interpreted as a metasedimentary sequence. The ar.iphibolites represent metamorphose interbedded shales and basic ií^neous sills.
