This project originated through a five year educational exchange program between the Beijing Institute of Urban Construction, the South China Institute of Technology, and Texas Tech University. Several projects have been initiated through this program. A Chinese community for 10,000 persons was tentatively chosen before leaving for China as a thesis project for partial fulfillment of the degree of Bachelor of Architecture. Prior to travel to China, basic background research was compiled to gain an understanding of China and its people. A field inanual was also written so that information necessary for completion of the project could be determined and compiled effectively. Upon return from China, critical evaluation of all data collected brought about the realization that a viable thesis could not be justified by this project. It was, because of parameters set previously, inappropriate for the development of China. The site chosen by the South China Institute of Technology was deemed counterproductive to the growth of Guangzhou and thus was abandoned and research was conducted on other potential sites. After several long discussions, a project was created which involved a thesis of substantial meaning and positive implications. The main goal of this revised thesis was determined to be the development of a new approach to the design of a model Chinese Community. This new community will be named Renmin Zhujiang, which means people's pearl.
